Detoxing your LIVER...What Do I mean by that and WHY is that important?
Your liver represents the human body's primary filtration system, converting toxins into waste products, cleansing your blood, and metabolizing nutrients and medications to provide the body with some of its most important proteins.
Saleh Alqahtani, director of clinical liver research for Johns Hopkins Medicine. The second-largest organ in your body, your liver has some 500 critical jobs. “Your liver removes all toxins, clears medication from your body and metabolizes [breaks down] all your food,” says Dr. Alqahtani. It also adjust cholesterol levels, builds proteins and makes bile, which helps you absorb fats, stores sugar for when you really need it and regulates hormone levels. For your liver, that’s all in a day’s work.
“If your liver stopped working,” says Dr. Alqahtani, “toxins would accumulate, you couldn’t digest your food and medications would never leave your body. ”In fact — you can’t live a week without your liver. So here’s a list of ways to avoid liver disease. Some of them are healthy behaviors you might do anyway. Others may never have occurred to you.
1. Be careful about alcohol consumption - If you think only lifelong, falling-down drunks get cirrhosis of the liver — you’re mistaken. Just four ounces a day of hard liquor for men (two for women) can begin to scar your liver.
2. Wash produce and steer clear of toxins - Pesticides and other toxins can damage your liver. Read warning labels on the chemicals you use. INCLUDING PRESCRIPTION AND NON PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
3. Prevent hepatitis A, B and C: - Hepatitis A and B are viral diseases of the liver. Practice safe sex: - Hepatitis B and C can develop into chronic conditions that may eventually destroy your liver. They are transmitted by blood and other bodily fluids. Wash your hands: Hepatitis A is spread through contact with contaminated food or water.
4. Watch out for medications and herbs “The number one reason clinical [medicine] trials are stopped or drugs removed from the market is the liver,” warns Dr. Alqahtani
5. Exercise and eat right.....Avoid fatty liver disease by avoiding obesity. Which means LOW CARBOHYDRATES!! Researchers have proven carbohydrates with a high glycemic index cause fat to accumulate in the liver. By stabilizing blood sugar levels, suggestions are given to reduce the risk high glycemic foods pose, thus minimizing the growing threat of fatty liver disease. Says Nicole Cutler, L.Ac., MTCM, Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM)®

By choosing low glycemic foods, sharp swings in blood sugar are avoided, thereby naturally decreasing the body’s production of insulin.
Some popular high glycemic foods to remove from your diet are:
Potatoes
Corn (Of ALL kinds)
White and Wheat flour
Rice – white or brown
Sugar (All kinds)
Watermelon
Most refined breakfast cereals
Grains of ANY kind
In addition to choosing your carbohydrates carefully, supplementing with milk thistle offers an additional level of protection against fat accumulation in the liver. The regular use of milk thistle decreases insulin resistance, where normal amounts of insulin are inadequate to normalize blood sugar.
According to a study published on October 30, 2006 in Phytotherapy Research, Iranian researchers demonstrated that milk thistle seed extract helped control blood sugar for people with type 2 diabetes. In this double-blind study, diabetics taking milk thistle for four months showed better blood sugar control, cholesterol and triglyceride levels than the control group. This research shows that milk thistle can help stabilize swinging blood glucose levels to prevent the accumulation of insulin and therefore fat in the liver. In order to thwart the burgeoning numbers of people with fatty liver, a better understanding of carbohydrates is needed. Since consuming lots of carbohydrates such as bread, wheat and grains, cake, rice, corn, potatoes, etc... contributes to a fatty liver, those concerned with liver health are better off choosing low carb foods. The more we protect our liver’s health by supplementing with milk thistle and eating low carbohydrates, the further away a fatty liver disease epidemic becomes.
